Starting April 1st, 2022, newly issued MSP Practitioner and Payee numbers, as well as Specialty Codes, will see some changes.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) and Health Insurance BC (HIBC) have estimated that the availability of Practitioner and Payee numbers will be depleted by around 2023. The MSP Claims system currently defines Practitioner and Payee numbers as 5 characters long between 00000 and 99999. It will be impossible to register new practitioners in BC once these numbers are depleted. Therefore, starting April 1st, 2022, Practitioner and Payee numbers will expand with a range of alphanumeric values.

Additionally, MoH and HIBC have determined that Specialty Codes will also require alphanumeric values in order to expand the range for a minimum of 20 new codes over the next 5 years.

Reformatting these codes requires the following updates to systems, forms, and processes:

  • October 31st, 2020-March 31st, 2021 Internal project planning and assessments
  • July 31st, 2021 design scheduled for completion
  • November 30th, 2021 Solution Built scheduled for completion
  • February 28th, 2022 Testing scheduled for completion
  • February 1st, 2022-February 28th, 2022 Training
  • February 1st, 2022-March 31st, 2022 Deployment
  • April 1st, 2022 -June 30th, 2022 Stabilization

Changes can be found under Teleplan Claims Submission and Processing.

Keep an eye out for updates from HIBC as implementation nears (March 31st, 2022). If you have any questions about these changes, reach out to our team.
